SEO Case Study: Rank #1 Without Backlinks – Power of Established Authority

How a single comparison article, built on a strong domain and one focused sprint, captured high-intent commercial keywords without a single referring domain.

Publishing a brand-new page and pushing it into the top of Google for commercial keywords – without buying or earning a single backlink – sounds like the kind of claim a link-building agency shouldn’t be making. But that is exactly what happened with our comparison article on the top guest posting services, and this case study shows the data behind it.

When we shipped the page in late November 2025, our money page – /services/guest-posting/ – had been losing ground for months. Rankings were sliding, the URL Rating had dropped from 16 to single digits, and the keywords we cared about were dropping out of the top 20. We needed to recapture commercial intent for the head term “guest posting services” and the related cluster around it. So we wrote, designed, and shipped a single comparison article inside one focused sprint.

Four months later, with zero backlinks built to it, the page is ranking #1 for two transactional terms, sits at #6 for the 1,100-volume head keyword, and is now driving more organic visits than the service page it was built to support.

What a Comparison Page Really Is (And Why It Punches Above Its Weight)

A comparison page – the kind that ranks for “best [thing]” or “top [category]” – is one of the highest-leverage formats in B2B SEO. It captures users at the exact moment they are evaluating providers, and it lets you frame the conversation on your own ground. When the publishing domain is already trusted, a well-structured comparison page can rank without external link building because three things work in its favour at the same time:

  • On-page intent match. The page satisfies the dominant search intent for “best”-style queries – a structured list of options, with criteria, pros and cons, and a clear recommendation.
  • Internal authority transfer. Internal links from the homepage, the services page, and topical blog hubs pass equity to the new URL the moment it is published.
  • Domain trust. Google extends some of the parent domain’s credibility to a brand-new page on that domain, which is why authoritative sites can rank new URLs in days, not months.

That third point is the one most teams underestimate. The page only ranks because the domain is strong enough to lend it credibility – and the domain is strong because of years of link acquisition. The two work together.

The Beginning of Our Journey

By autumn 2025, our service page /services/guest-posting/ was in trouble. The page had previously held a healthy footprint of more than 100 ranking keywords and a URL Rating in the mid-teens, but a stretch of broader Google updates – combined with a rapidly changing competitor set – had pushed it down hard:

  • URL Rating fell from 15 → 9 between September and October 2025.
  • Ranking keywords (positions 11+) collapsed from ~100 to ~20 in the same window.
  • Referring domains dropped from 101 to 31 in November 2025 alone
  • Average position for the head term “guest posting services” settled around position 21.

The first instinct in this situation is to throw more links at it. We did the opposite. Instead of building backlinks to a page Google had already de-prioritised, we created a fresh comparison article that could absorb the high-intent traffic, internally link to the service page, and pass the parent domain’s authority through to it.

How We Shipped It: The One-Week Sprint

We used the same one-week sprint framework as our previous on-page SEO case study. One article, one week, three milestones. The team is small and in-house – our account manager (also our designer), our Head of Operations (deep technical SEO and front-end experience), and the strategy lead.

DayOwnerDeliverable
Monday EODStrategy + CopyComparison page copy finalised – competitor research, criteria framework, and recommendation logic locked in
Wednesday EODDesignLayout completed and approved – comparison cards, internal CTAs, and FAQ blocks built and reviewed
Friday EODTech / OpsPage published, JSON-LD schema added, internal links wired in, indexing requested in Google Search Console

The next week, the cycle repeated for the next article – supporting LinkedIn posts and the newsletter were built off the previously published piece, so each sprint compounded the previous one.

What Was Actually Done On The Page

  • Copy rewrite for AI-readable structure. Clear H2/H3 hierarchy, scannable paragraphs, and direct comparative statements that LLM-driven search engines can quote.
  • Competitor research as the spine. We documented the leading guest posting providers honestly – including ourselves – with consistent evaluation criteria so the page reads as useful rather than self-serving.
  • FAQ section built from real customer call data. The questions came from objections we hear on sales calls, not from a keyword tool.
  • JSON-LD schema for the comparison and FAQ blocks, so the page is eligible for richer SERP features.
  • Strategic internal linking from the homepage, services hub, and related blog posts – pointing to the new URL with relevant anchors and pulling equity into it from day one.
  • A direct internal link from the comparison article to the service page, so high-intent visitors who land on the comparison can convert on the right destination.

Results: 4 Months Live, Zero Backlinks Built

The page was indexed within days of launch. Below is what the first four months looked like in Ahrefs.

Organic Traffic Growth – Comparison Article (/blog/top-guest-posting-services/):

Organic Traffic Growth

Estimated organic visits / month for the comparison article. From 7 visits in December 2025 to 104 in April 2026 – a ~14× increase in four months

Quick Summary of Growth (Before → After)

Quick Summary of Growth

All gains achieved with zero referring domains pointed at the page.
Authority was passed entirely through internal linking from the OutreachMama domain.

  • Page launched late November 2025 with no historical authority of its own.
  • Now ranks for 11 keywords in the top 10, up from 0.
  • 4 keywords in the top 3, including position #1 for two transactional terms: “best guest posting service” and “best guest post services”.
  • 6 for “guest posting services” (1,100 monthly searches in the US, KD 43) – the head term we were trying to recapture.
  • GSC: 28.4K impressions, 54 clicks, average position 6.7 across the last 3 months.
  • All of it earned with zero referring domains pointing at the URL.

Do I Even Need Backlinks?

Short answer: yes. The longer, more honest answer is that we were only able to rank this page without building backlinks to the page itself because the parent domain had already done the heavy lifting. Years of guest posting, blogger outreach, and HARO placements gave OutreachMama enough authority for Google to extend trust to a brand-new URL on the domain.

Internal links did the rest. The moment we wired the new comparison article into the homepage, the services hub, and a handful of topically relevant blog posts, the page inherited equity it could never have earned alone in four months. That is the compounding effect of a strong domain – every new page you publish starts at a higher floor than the last one.

Comparison pages don’t replace link building. They reward domains that have already invested in it. If your domain is strong enough, a single sprint can capture commercial-intent rankings that would otherwise require months of outreach.
