Before we do that, let’s recap the details on SearchGPT.
What is SearchGPT?
SearchGPT is built on ChatGPT’s famous and widely used large language model (LLM).
As everyone knows, OpenAI is the giant in the AI space (valued at $157 billion; with backing and a partnership with Microsoft).
OpenAI is going after Google’s monopoly in search; if it can claim the crown it could be worth trillions.
OpenAI is also constantly scraping the web for material to train and enhance their models on, with the aim of making them smarter, until at one point humanity has developed “True AI”, also known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
So, in that sense, it’s reliant on Google and other search engines as they’re the getaway to the entire world’s knowledge. Through the development of their own search function, OpenAI can bypass the gatekeepers and draw straight from the well.
If you want to use this feature, you need to be a ChatGPT Plus or Team user (using version 4). It’s going to become free for everyone over the next few months. You will get search results in the Free (version 3) tier, but they won’t be as good.

As we don’t know how popular SearchGPT is going to be, it’s impossible to say how many people will switch from Google to SearchGPT.
We do know, as of August 2024, that “ChatGPT now has more than 200 million weekly active users, double the number it had in the last fall season.”
In comparison, there are 8.55 billion Google searches conducted every single day. That’s 2 trillion every year, with 90% dominance of the search market.
So, OpenAI has its work cut out to try and match the user numbers of Google, and Google is working hard to improve the search user experience. Launching AI Overviews is a step in the right direction.
However, given OpenAI’s rapid growth, vast funding reserves, and Microsoft partnership, it can’t be ignored.
How to rank in SearchGPT?
Here are a few steps you can take to make sure you rank and appear in results when people ask ChatGPT for information:
- Remember the dialogue it returns are more conversational than search results in Google’s SERPs.
- People are asking long-tail keyword questions, so long-form content with “snippets”, along the lines of what appears in AI Overviews is what ChatGPT will be returning to the questions people ask.
- For ChatGPT Plus or Team users: Bing is the answer!
- For Free users, ChatGPT scraps a database that was last updated in 2022.
- So, let’s focus on Bing: Check how your website, content, and any PR articles or backlink blogs or other content online (including social media) appears in Bing SERPs for keywords that are driving traffic.
- Signup for Bing Webmaster Tools and improve your site’s performance in search. Here’s a useful guide on how to use this from Neil Patel.
- If you rank better for certain keywords and phrases in Bing then that’s good because it means you’ll have a better chance of appearing in SearchGPT for questions your potential customers are asking.
- If there’s gaps you can fill in those search results, then get guest articles and blogs published so that when SearchGPT pulls in results from Bing, articles with links to your website appear.
- Anything that works for Google will work for Bing. But, you might have a better chance of appearing in SearchGPT results because there’s a lot less competition and a better chance of securing top ranking positions.
